Sōma is a boy whose dream is to inherit his fathers restaurant and surpass his culinary skills. However, after Jōichirō closes down his restaurant to travel around the world, he sends Sōma off to an elite culinary high school called Tōtsuki Culinary Academy to hone his skills in the kitchen. Little did he know when first arriving was that only 1% of the students there manage to graduate. Sōma's skills as a chef are now put to the test and its up to him and his classmates to survive the ordeals of Tōtsuki Culinary Academy.
Sōma is a young teenage boy with yellow eyes and a vertical scar on his left eyebrow. He has spiky dark-red hair with short bangs. After the Stagiaire event, Soma's bangs grew in length, now reaching just below his cheeks and has more volume overall.
Sōma's main outfit is his Restaurant Yukihira cooking uniform, consisting of a black shirt with the restaurant's logo on the back and left chest area of his shirt. Whenever he cooks, he wears a white apron over his waist. While at Tōtsuki, Sōma wears a black coat summer school uniform over his Yukihira cooking uniform. Sōma also ties his trademark white headband around his forehead whenever he cooks. If he is not cooking or bathing, he wears his headband around his left wrist.
Sōma's main cooking style is called the Yukihira Style (ゆきひら流 Yukihira-ryū ), an original style developed by his father, Jōichirō Yukihira. The Yukihira Style uses different cooking styles, techniques, and cuisine types from around the world. As the story progresses, Sōma manages to evolve this cooking style through his immense levels of creativity, inspirations, and especially through trial and error.
Sōma is also proficient at Live Cooking, being able to demonstrate remarkable showmanship and knows how to draw in a crowd to serve his dishes. Sōma also has knowledge of a French cooking technique called Poêlé where it removes the bad smell and fat released during the cooking process by constantly adding olive oil. He also knows Vegetable Carving where he carves vegetables into artistic shapes such as flowers and animals. He can also handle with being a sous chef, being able to assist with just about anyone without slowing down the work process or deviating from the chefs intended recipe.
